BEVERLEY NAIDOO joined the resistance to apartheid as a student in South Africa, leading to detention without trial and exile in England. She wrote her first children’s book, Journey to Jo’burg, in 1985, while working as a teacher. Although originally banned in South Africa, this acclaimed and enormously successful novel helped thousands of readers elsewhere to understand what life under apartheid meant for children. A sequel, Chain of Fire, followed.
Naidoo is also the author of the Carnegie Medal winner The Other Side of Truth, its sequel Web of Lies, and the award-winning books Out of Bounds, No Turning Back, and Burn My Heart. She has a PhD and received a number of honorary doctorates for her body of work. She shares royalties from Journey to Jo’burg with the Canon Collins Educational and Legal Assistance Trust, which aims to build a community of “change agents” across southern Africa.
