The girl next to me, this girl Lexi, just threw a note on my desk.

I have no idea why she’s giving me a note, she isn’t even that nice to me. One time I saw her roll her eyes when I asked Ms. Morris a question. I think she might be wild. Her jeans are all cut up, like Gordy’s dog got hold of them.

It isn’t a note, it’s a list. It says Cynthia at the top and so far six people wrote things. I know I’m supposed to write something next because number five is blank, but all of the things are so mean!

1. She wears the ugliest pants ever.

2. I think she makes them out of towels!

3. Does she ever brush her hair?

4. She totally needs braces.

I don’t want to write anything but when I show the note to Kelsey, she says I better. I think Kelsey put on too much eye shadow today. I wonder if she knows, I wonder if I should tell her. She writes something on her notebook and pushes it to the edge of her desk so I can see. Do you want them to do you next?

One day after school I heard Cynthia telling Ms. Morris about her rabbit so I know she likes rabbits, but that isn’t weird. I write it down anyway because Lexi will probably think it’s weird. I write 5. She likes rabbits, and pass the note to Kelsey. Kelsey laughs but I don’t know if she’s laughing because she thinks rabbits are a weird thing to like or because she thinks it’s funny that I wrote rabbits.

Kelsey just showed me what she wrote. 6. She likes to eat them.

Cynthia is opening her mouth, she’s taking a bite out of the rabbit. The rabbit squeals so loud my eyes scrunch up. There’s blood coming out of Cynthia’s mouth.

Kelsey says, “Oh my God, you should see your face!”

Now everyone is looking at my face.

“Kelsey,” Ms. Morris says, “is there something you’d like to share with the class?”

“No thank you.”

“No thank you,” Jake says in a super girly voice that doesn’t sound at all like how Kelsey said it, and now a bunch of kids are laughing. I feel bad for Kelsey but I also know why it happened. It’s because she was being mean to Cynthia.

Actually, I kind of think she was being mean to me too.
