Epilogue

I wake up shivering under my covers, and I can see my breath in front of my face like smoke clouds. “Why is it so cold in here?”

Jez stirs next to me, and I see she’s under the covers, too, something she’s never done before, but there’s clearly something wrong with the heat in my apartment. I get up, grabbing my robe from the chair in the corner and slipping it on. I go over to the thermostat in the living room to confirm my suspicion. The heat is off.

“Damn it.” I walk back to the bedroom and grab my phone from the bedside table. I have Mr. Hall’s number on my list of favorites in case of emergencies like this.

“I know, I know. There’s no heat,” he answers. “I’ll call the repair man as soon as his office opens.”

“I guess I’m not your first call this morning,” I say.

“No, Piper, you’re not. I do have good news for you, though. The hot water still works. I suggest you take a warm shower and then leave the apartment for the day. I anticipate everything being fixed by this evening.”

“Will do. Thanks, Mr. Hall.”

He ends the call without responding.

I grab some clothes and get ready to start my day even though it’s a good hour before my alarm is set to go off. “Mommy’s going to have to bring you to Grandma and Grandpa’s house,” I tell Jez. “You can spend the day trying to teach Max to be a good dog so he doesn’t need to be gated so much.”

She groans and snuggles under the covers again.

I head to the bathroom and set the water as hot as it will go. After getting undressed, I step under the stream of water, but it’s not hot at all. It’s freezing cold.

My eyes open wide.

I’m shivering under my covers, and my breath looks like smoke clouds in front of my face. “Why is it so cold in here?”

Jez stirs next to me, under the covers, too. I get up, grabbing my robe from the chair in the corner and slipping it on. I go over to the thermostat in the living room. The heat is off.

“Damn it.” I walk back to the bedroom and grab my phone from the bedside table and call Mr. Hall.

“I know, I know. There’s no heat,” he answers. “I’ll call the repair man as soon as his office opens.”

Déjà vu washes over me. “Mr. Hall, did I already call you this morning?”

“No, Piper, you didn’t. But just about everyone else in the building has. I do have good news for you, though. The hot water still works. I suggest you take a warm shower and then leave the apartment for the day. I anticipate everything being fixed by this evening.”

“Will do. Thanks, Mr. Hall.”

He ends the call without responding, leaving me to wonder what on earth is going on.

This all happened already. Didn’t it? Or was it a dream?

Confused, I grab some clothes and get ready to start my day even though it’s a good hour before my alarm is set to go off.

It wasn’t a dream. I already experienced all of this. But I can only think of one explanation, and it seems just as farfetched.

Did I have a premonition?
