“Don’t worry,” he heard the girl say to her friend as their ball tangled in the power lines overhead. “Those are our Jewish neighbors.”

He stood and closed the window.

“The firemen said to air out as long as possible,” she protested.

He shook his head, hoping she didn’t hear.
