Red Heart Super Saver Economy medium (worsted) weight yarn (7 oz/364 yds/198g per skein):
6 skeins black #312
3 skeins buff #334
Medium (worsted) weight yarn:
10 oz/500yds/284g fall variegated
3 oz/150 yds/85g coral
Size G/6/4mm afghan and crochet hooks or size needed to obtain gauge
Tapestry needle
4 sts = 1 inch; 3 rows = 1 inch
Separate buff into 2-ply strands as needed for embroidery.
Each square on graph equals one stitch.
To change color in afghan st, drop last color to wrong side of work, pick up next color from under last color. Do not carry dropped color across back of work; use separate ball of yarn for each section of color. Fasten off each color when no longer needed.
Row 1: With afghan hook and black, ch 50; keeping all lps on hook, insert hook in second ch from hook, yo, pull through ch, (insert in next ch, yo, pull through ch) across; to work lps off hook, yo, pull through first lp on hook, (yo, pull through next 2 lps on hook—see illustration, step 1)
across. Note: Lp (vertical bar) remaining on hook at end is first st on next row. (50 sts made)
Row 2: To work in afghan st, sk first vertical bar (see illustration, step 2),
*insert hook under next vertical bar (see illustration, step 3),
yo, pull through bar; rep from * across to last vertical bar; for last st, insert hook under last vertical bar and the bar directly behind it (see illustration, step 4),
yo, pull through both bars; work lps off hook.
Rows 3–42: Changing colors (see Pattern Notes and below) according to corresponding row on corresponding graph, work in afghan st. At end of last row, fasten off.
Rnd 43: Working around entire outer edge, join buff with sc in first st, 2 sc in same st as first sc, sc in each st across to last st, 3 sc in last st, sc in end of each row across; working in starting ch on opposite side of row 1, 3 sc in first ch, sc in each ch across to last ch, 3 sc in last ch, sc in end of each row across, join with sl st in first sc. Fasten off.
Work three Motifs according to each graph on pages 23 and 24 for a total of 12 Motifs.
Using 2-ply buff and Couching stitch (see illustration below) embroider each Motif according to corresponding graph.
1: For first seam, working through both thicknesses and in back lps (see Stitch Guide), join black with sc in center corner st of first two Motifs (see Assembly Diagram), sc in each st across to next center corner st, sc in corner st, (pick up next two Motifs according to illustration, sc in center corner st, sc in each st across with last sc in center corner st) across according to illustration. Fasten off.
2: For second seam, repeat step 1 according to illustration.
3: Turn Motifs to the side and join openings between Motifs in same manner.
Rnd 1: Working around outer edge in back lps, join black with sl st in any st, ch 1, hdc in each st and in each seam around with 3 hdc in each center corner st, join with sl st in top of first hdc. Fasten off.
Rnd 2: Join buff with sl st in any st, ch 1, hdc in each st around with 3 hdc in each center corner st, join with sl st in top of first hdc. Fasten off.
Rnd 3: Join medium coral with sc in any st, sc in each st around with 3 sc in each center corner st, join with sl st in top of first sc. Fasten off.
Rnd 4: Join black with sl st in any st, ch 1, hdc in each st around with 3 hdc in each center corner st, join with sl st in top of first hdc.
Rnds 5 & 6: Ch 1, hdc in each st around with 3 hdc in each center corner st, join. At end of last rnd, fasten off.
Rnd 7: Join buff with sc in any st, sc in each st around with 3 sc in each center corner st, join with sl st in top of first sc. Fasten off.
Cut five 18-inch strands buff. Fold strands in half, insert hook in st, pull fold through, pull ends through fold. Pull tight. Trim.
Fringe in first st on one short end, (sk next 2 sts, Fringe in next st) across. Rep on rem short end.
