Description

Also called goosegrass, cleavers are weeds that grow close to the ground with creeping, branching stems. They usually attach themselves to whatever surface is available with the hooked hairs on the leaves and stems. The narrow, lance-shaped leaves occur in groups of 6-9 at the joints of stems. Cleavers have very small white flowers with four petals.

Where To Find

Cleavers exist commonly in temperate regions and some sub-tropical areas. They can be found in sunny areas of fields, yards and woods in the fall, winter and spring.

What And How To Eat

The seeds, leaves, stems are edible. You can roast the seeds to make coffee and use dried leaves and stems for tea. The leaves and stems can be eaten raw or cooked.

Medicinal Use

Cleavers tea is used internally and externally to treat several ailments. These include urinary tract problems, skin troubles, burns and ulcerated skin.
