Description

Strawberry is a small fruiting herb that grows close to the ground. The leaves form a basal rosette with three leaves growing together. The leaflets are elliptic–diamond-shaped with coarsely serrated edges. It produces small white flowers in the spring and red fleshy fruits with a pitted surface.

Where To Find

Strawberries grow in the north temperate zone as well as the high mountains in the southern Western Hemisphere. They thrive in sunny or partially shaded fields in forest margins, logging clearings, river banks, rocky outcrops and pastures. They are also planted in many gardens.

What And How To Eat

The fruits and young leaves are edible. Fruits can be eaten fresh, dried or cooked. Leaves can be dried and use to make tea.

Warning: Eat only true strawberries that produce white flowers. Similar plants that do not have white flowers may be poisonous.

Medicinal Use

A decoction of strawberry leaves is used as a remedy for dysentery.
