From the beginning, the life of Bessie Wallis Warfield was touched by tragedy. Her father, Teackle Wallis Warfield, died of tuberculosis when she was just four months old. Before he breathed his last, he was shown this picture of his daughter. It was thought that if Teackle saw her in person he could infect her, too. As he gazed at the picture he told Wallis’s mother, Alice: “I hope she will be like you and I hope she will be happy.”
