Insight: Theme Parks
Hong Kong’s Disneyland and long-running local competitor Ocean Park make the SAR a good bet for a family holiday.
When Hong Kong Disneyland opened in 2005, it seemed that the writing was on the wall for its local counterpart, Ocean Park. A major renovation and expansion soon put paid to that idea, and now both parks attract a similar number of thrill-seeking locals and tourists. In fact, each offers a quite different day out – as the name suggests, an aquarium forms a big part of Ocean Park’s draw, while Disneyland has its own unique appeal for small children. Both have rollercoasters and other rides for thrill-seekers – although Ocean Park has more for older kids.
Disneyland (for more information, click here for opening times and other details) is divided into seven themed areas (Main Street USA, Fantasyland, Adventureland, Tomorrowland, Grizzly Trail, Mystic Point and Toy Story Land). Tickets give access to all. As with other Disneyland parks, be prepared to queue – it’s best to avoid weekends and the hottest months: waiting in line with bored, over-heated children is no fun for anyone.
As well as its impressive aquariums, Ocean Park (for more information, click here), on Hong Kong Island’s south coast, has a mile-long cable car, various thrilling rides, dolphin shows and pandas.
There is a nightly fireworks display over Disneyland’s Sleeping Beauty Castle, at the centre of Fantasyland, one of the park’s four themed areas.
