If purchasing plants in plastic pots or containers, give them a little love before plunking them in the ground. Dig the hole bigger than the pot the plant came in and scrape up the sides of the hole. This will help the roots grow away from the plant. Carefully remove the plant from the container; sometimes this necessitates cutting the container away from the plant. Once the plant is removed, pull the roots apart gently so that they aren’t wrapping around themselves. This encourages healthy growth of the plant. Gently place the plant in the center of the hole and push the soil back around it. Press the soil down firmly (but don’t stand on it) so that you remove big air pockets. Water plants well after planting and continue giving additional water throughout the first season if need be.
