Dear Beautiful Girl

Dear Beautiful girl,

“What they call you is one thing, what you answer to is another.” -Lucille Clifton.

(I know a little poetry, too.)

Don’t go defining yourself as “vitiligo girl”. You’re more than just your skin. Having vitiligo is a condition, but don’t make it your crutch. Like I told you before, you have many facets and more to explore. If you decide you want treatments now or later, I support you in that.

Yes, some people have commented on my freckles and red hair. One of the other camp counselors flat out told me he’d never met a bi-racial redhead before. Then he asked if my mom was black or my dad was black. It sparked a whole conversation on genetics and dominant genes.

As for poetry, send me one of your poems. I’d love to read it or if you’ll allow, I can read some from your journal when I get there. I won’t make this letter long because hopefully by the time you’re reading this. I’ll already be there.

Science fact related to something you said: Ticks are not insects. They are real-life vampires. No, just kidding...sort of. They are arachnids.

Voracious reader,

Jonah
