CHILLED FEET

Chilled feet and frostbite

are caused by prolonged standing

in cold water and mud

were our constant companions.

These conditions can be prevented or diminished

by means of improved trench construction; by reducing

the time spent in trenches; by movement;

by the provision of warmth, shelter, hot food,

and facilities for washing the feet and drying wet clothes

were nowhere to be found.

Boots, socks, and puttees are to be removed

at least once in 24 hours, the feet rubbed

for 20 minutes, dried, greased with whale oil,

and a dry pair of socks put on, if available.

On no account must the feet be held near a fire

would have been a godsend

nor must hot water be used.
