Overripe

A slice across the orangey pink to seeds, abundant as deer droppings. They spill from the cavity except the one that ceases minute travel to skin. Pungent flesh, bereft papaya—in another context, a quickening then a stench. For this animal, a narrative tracing an event. Then finding comfort—surcease of sorrow.
