  2. New Requirement for First-Year Students

Effective immediately, all first-year students will be required to take an academic writing course. The course will help students to learn how to write papers appropriate for college-level courses, including how to develop a thesis statement and how to structure the paper.

The course will cover the standards for conducting research and citing that research. Students will learn when it is acceptable to paraphrase, or summarize, another author’s work, and when that student should quote the author. The course will also cover how to avoid plagiarizing (or copying someone else’s work without citation).

  3. Listen to Track 191.

The woman expresses her opinion about the new writing class requirement. State her opinion and explain the reasons she gives for holding that opinion.
