A solitary French or Belgian soldier watches defeated British troops as they trudge through the streets of the town of Dunkirk in the hope of being evacuated. Once the Germans had broken through the Allies’ defences in north-eastern France it became imperative that the BEF escape entrapment as swiftly as possible or face complete annihilation.
