Margot Mayo had launched the magazine Promenade: A Magazine of American Folk Lore, focusing on folk music recordings, radio programs, and events as part of the ASDG in 1940. Two essays by Pete, relating to his southern trip the previous fall, appeared in the January 1941 issue. The first, “Banjo Picker in Kentucky,” discusses his meeting with Rufus Crisp, Mayo’s cousin, and his wife, Lulu, in Allen, Kentucky. Pete demonstrates his thirst for learning traditional tunes and banjo techniques. In the second, “Back Where I Come From,” the title drawn from Alan Lomax’s CBS radio show, Pete promotes his zeal to spread banjo playing and the thrill of learning from traditional musicians.
