Jade did everything she could. It just wasn’t enough to stop the High Priestess. Even someone that made a point of trying to remain as optimistic as possible like me had to admit, at this point, it seemed like, short of death, nothing could stop the High Priestess.
Once everyone was outside (save Priamos and Tempest), Serena and Maya walked out. Serena had a wide grin and a wild look in her eyes. She was enjoying getting to see this place burn down.
“Do it,” she told one of the men that had been in charge of going around and filling the place full of gasoline.
I wasn’t totally sure who they were, but I didn’t care. For the first time (that I could remember, anyway), I didn’t like someone even without knowing who they were.
The man then cast a spell and the house and almost everything around it immediately burst into flames.
I looked up and watched as Jade turned away, unable to look at what was happening. There were tears in her eyes, but I could tell she was doing everything in her power to make certain that they didn’t fall. At least, not in front of Serena and Maya and their “minions” (as Jade was now calling them).
“See this?” Serena called out to us.
“What are we? Stupid?” I heard Spencer mumble. He was standing behind me, but I was pretty sure that I wouldn’t have been able to hear him if he wasn’t.
“This is what happens when you try to buck,” Serena continued, “Remember this next time you try anything. Next time, it won’t just be the house that I set on fire.”
