Smoke filled the air well past sunset. Even when it was dark, you could still see the gray streaks in the sky. The manor wasn’t the only place that got burned. Every house without a five-mile radius of the woods was destroyed. Dozens of families were without homes that night - except for Serena and Maya, of course. They still had their home and it was arguably closer to the woods than even the manor was.

Serena was gracious enough to let us know she was setting up a group shelter available near the town square for us to use if we really wanted it, but none of us wanted it.

We did end up taking the younger kids to the shelter to get them out of the streets, but that was only a temporary solution. None of us trusted Serena enough to allow it to be long term.

But before we could keep the kids with us, Nadia, Jade, and I had more work to do.

We headed deep into the woods where no one could find us - Synthetic or regular witch - and hid away for the night in hopes of getting some rest.

For in the morning we wouldn’t be taking this lying down.
