THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 7

The USS Ramapo was en route from Manila, Philippines, to San Diego when a massive storm developed over the Pacific Ocean. On this day in 1933, several members of the crew reported seeing waves that were later calculated to be 112 feet tall, the highest sea waves on record (tsunamis can be higher, but they are influenced by shallow coastlines). The Ramapo weathered the storm without serious incident.
