HOW TO AVOID BEING STRUCK BY LIGHTNING

1 Loud or frequent thunder indicates that lightning activity is approaching.

High winds, rainfall, and cloud cover often act as precursors to actual cloud-to-ground strikes.

2 When you see lightning, count the number of seconds until thunder is heard and then divide by five.

This will indicate how far the storm is from you in miles. If the time delay between seeing the lightning and hearing the thunder is fewer than 30 seconds, seek a safer location immediately.

3 If there is an enclosed building or vehicle nearby, try to enter it.

If you can’t get inside and you must stay in an open area, do not lie flat. Kneel with your hands on the ground and your head low. Do not stand under solitary trees or picnic shelters and do not lie in any depressions you may find in the ground.
