TODAY IN SURVIVAL HISTORY

At the Norwegian Wood music festival in Oslo on this day in 2004, a lollipop thrown from the crowd hit singer David Bowie in the eye and stuck between his left eyelid and eyeball. Although Bowie was momentarily blinded, the lollipop was removed and he continued the show, saying he already had only one good eye, and that the candytossing culprit was lucky the lollipop hit the bad one. His left eye had been damaged when childhood friend George Underwood punched him in the face. Since that schoolyard fight, Bowie’s eye has been permanently dilated, making his eyes appear to be different colors.
