TODAY’S HERO

Mother Teresa opened the first Mission of Charity in Calcutta, India, on October 26, 1950. She was born Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu in 1910 in Skopje, which was then part of Yugoslavia. She became a nun at Darjeeling, in the Himalayas, and by 1948 had become an Indian citizen, dedicated to helping the poor. She later created the “Compassionate Heart” Ministry for the Dying, which offered a place for the terminally ill to die with dignity. Mother Teresa was presented with the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979 and beatified in 2003.
