JIM: When I was in the Navy, a skinhead with a fondness for hardcore turned me on to Bad Religion. We made a mixtape from his record collection that included the Back to the Known EP. I played that tape all over the Western Pacific and it became the soundtrack to a lot of great memories. I can still recall racing across a highway in Yokosuka, Japan, while singing “Frogger” like a loon. After I got out of the Navy, I took that tape to college in ultraconservative southwest Virginia, where it helped keep me sane, and then I brought it back to Southern California when I returned for good. There are only five songs on Back to the Known, a fraction of Bad Religion’s output, but I’ve been carrying them with me for over thirty years. Without that tape, I never would have had the courage to write Bad Religion’s history. But I couldn’t have done it without early readers Todd Taylor and Michael Fournier (Razorcake por vida!) or the incomparable Amanda Johnston for her impeccable editorial assistance. The Bad Religion Page was my go-to resource for information about the band’s enormous output and impact. (If you’re a fan, you owe it to yourself to check it out at www.thebrpage.net.) I also owe a debt of gratitude to Jack Rabid of The Big Takeover, who has been chronicling the band since the beginning. Thanks to everyone who shared their story with me, including former and current members of Bad Religion. Sincere thanks to Tod Goldberg and Maggie Downs for keeping an old sailor rat in their thoughts, and to Rick Marino, Ben Schafer, and Peter McGuigan for making the magic happen. I am especially grateful to Bad Religion’s talented and hardworking crew, whose humor and camaraderie brought a great deal of joy to the enterprise. Lastly, a huge thank you to Greg, Brett, Jay, and Brian for trusting me with their stories and welcoming me into their homes / offices / green rooms / tour buses / lives. My deepest gratitude goes to my wife, Nuvia, and daughter, Annie, who have listened to a lifetime’s worth of Bad Religion songs over the last few years.
