* Pilecki served in the Warsaw Uprising. After he was liberated from a POW camp, he travelled to Italy and joined the Polish II Corps. In October 1945, he returned to Poland under a false identity and at Anders’s request to gather information for the Polish Government-in-Exile on the arrests of members of the AK by the Soviet and communist Polish authorities. Pilecki was arrested by the Polish security police in May 1947, repeatedly tortured before his trial in March 1948, found guilty and executed in May 1948. Pilecki was rehabilitated in 1990 and posthumously awarded Poland’s highest decoration, the Order of the White Eagle.
