Area Attractions

Plan a couple of extra days in this remote corner of Arizona to take advantage of the many recreational opportunities in the area.

Antelope Canyon: One of the most famous and photographed slot canyons in the Southwest, Upper Antelope Canyon requires a guided tour, while Lower Antelope Canyon can be self-guided. Both lie within the Navajo Nation, which charges an entrance fee. More information: navajonationparks.org/htm/antelopecanyon.htm.

Colorado River: Normally, float trips on the Colorado require anywhere from 10 days to 3 weeks, but Colorado River Discovery offers half-day float trips and full-day paddle trips along the calm section between Glen Canyon Dam and Lee’s Ferry. Floating along the sandstone walls of Glen Canyon is mesmerizing. Details: 888-522-6644, raftthecanyon.com.

Lake Powell: This narrow, 186-mile-long body of water is set amid the deep canyons, rocky outcrops, and spectacular scenery of the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. Formed by Glen Canyon Dam, activities include kayaking, swimming, fishing, scuba diving, snorkeling, water skiing, hiking, and sightseeing. Kayaking is an amazing way to explore the sinuous shoreline and slot canyons of Lake Powell, and Hidden Canyon Kayak offers half-day, full-day, and multiday trip options as well as gear rentals.
