Appendix 3

TRAIL RESOURCES

The guidebook you’re holding is the most complete single resource compiled to date for the Arizona National Scenic Trail (AZT). Following are other collections to assist your planning for, navigation of, and enjoyment of this spectacular part of Arizona and the Southwestern United States.

Arizona Trail Databook

This document contains details on every turn, intersection, water source, and landmark along all 800-plus miles of the AZT. It features mileage, elevation, reference to GPS waypoints, water sources, campsites, trailhead parking, and more. Arizona Trail Association (ATA) members may download the Databook as a PDF from aztrail.org. (Nonmembers may easily join the ATA on this same website.)

Arizona Trail Mountain Bike Databook

Similar to the regular Arizona Trail Databook, this document contains details specific to mountain bikers, including preferred routes around wilderness areas. As with the Databook, ATA members may download the document from aztrail.org.

Arizona Trail Interactive Map

Using up-to-date GIS technology, the Arizona Trail Interactive Map allows you to view a variety of layers to get the most out of your pretrip research. Hosted by Esri online, this resource is available to the public at no charge at aztrail.org; ATA members are able to access additional layers for the most comprehensive resource available online.

Topo-Map Series

The ATA sells a complete set of AZT topo maps, compiled on one CD. Featuring 130 maps (1:24,000 scale) that you can easily print on letter-size paper from your home printer, the maps feature shaded relief, GPS grid marks, elevation profiles, and more. The map series is available for purchase at aztrail.org.

Garmin Trailhead Series

In collaboration with the ATA, Garmin International has developed a preprogrammed data card for handheld Garmin GPS devices, featuring the entire AZT route. The product provides highly detailed digital topographic maps comparable to 1:24,000-scale U.S. Geological Survey maps; a fully routable trail, plus basic road coverage for reference; searchable points of interests; 3-D terrain shading so you can estimate terrain difficulty; and township, range, and section.
