Henry ‘Long Ben’ Avery (or Every, alias Bridgeman)

English-born. Turned pirate for the second time off Corunna (May 1694). Cruised with Thomas Tew. Disbanded his crew at New Providence, Bahamas (June 1696). Retired to Devon.

Pirate Vessel: Fancy (ex-privateer King Charles II) – seized off Corunna (May 1694), wrecked at New Providence, Bahamas (June 1696).

Stede Bonnet

Resident of Barbados. Turned pirate 1717. Cruised with Edward ‘Blackbeard’ Teach. Hanged at Charleston (November 1718).

Pirate Vessel: Revenge (later renamed Royal James) – legally owned by Bonnet, captured by Captain Rhett in Cape Fear River (Autumn 1718).

John Bowen

Welsh-born founder of pirate settlement of Maritan, Madagascar. Retired to Mauritius (1702).

Pirate Vessels: Speaker (ex-slaver of that name) – wrecked off Mauritius (1701).

Speedy Return (ex-Company of Scotland merchantman) – seized at Maritan, Madagascar (July 1701), burned at Rajapore, India (August 1702).

Content (ex-Company of Scotland merchantman) – seized at Maritan, Madagascar (July 1701), burned at St Augustine, Madagascar some months later.

Defiance (ex-Moorish prize) – seized off Malabar Coast (August 1702), given to Captain Howard when crew disbanded at Mauritius some months later.

Howell Davis

Welsh-born resident of New Providence, Bahamas. Turned pirate after taking the pardon (Autumn 1718), killed in an ambush on the island of Principe, West Africa (July 1719).

Pirate Vessels: Buck – seized in Privateers Bay, Hispaniola (Autumn 1718) and abandoned off Fort St James, Gambia River, West Africa (February 1719).

King James (ex-Liverpool merchantman) – seized off Isle de Mayo, Cape Verde Islands (1719), abandoned off Fort St George, Anamaboe, West Africa (June 1719).

Royal Rover (ex-Ostender Mark De Campo) – seized off Cape Three Points, West Africa (May 1719) and burned to the waterline off Bermuda by Kennedy (December 1719).

Edward England

Resident of New Providence, Bahamas. Turned pirate after taking the pardon (1718), died Madagascar (1720/21). Cruised with La Bouche and Taylor. Was marooned on Mauritus by Taylor.

Pirate Vessels: Royal James (ex-merchantman Pearl) – probably seized off Guinea Coast.

Victory I (ex-merchantman Peterborough) – seized off Guinea Coast (1719), burned at Madagascar (1723).

Victory II (ex-East Indiaman Cassandra) – seized at Isle de Johanna, Comoro Islands (August 1720) and later surrendered to Spanish at Porto Bello (1723).

John Gow (alias Smith)

Scottish-born resident of Stromness. Turned pirate off the Canaries (November 1724); hanged at Wapping (June 1725).

Pirate Vessel: Revenge (ex-merchantmen Caroline, later renamed George) – seized off the Canaries (November 1724), captured by naval party in Calf Island, Orkney (February 1725).

Walter Kennedy

Irish-born resident of New Providence, Bahamas. Turned pirate with Howell Davis off Hispaniola (Autumn 1718), hanged at Execution Dock, London (July 1721). Served under Davis and Roberts.

Pirate Vessels: Buck – seized in Privateers Bay, Hispaniola (Autumn 1718) and abandoned off Fort St James, Gambia River, West Africa (February 1719).

King James (ex-Liverpool merchantman) – seized off Isle de Mayo, Cape Verde Islands (late 1718 or early 1719), abandoned off Fort St George, Anamaboe, West Africa (June 1719).

Flying Eagle (ex-Eagle of New York) – seized off Jamaica (December 1719), abandoned in Craignish Loch, Scotland (February 1720).

William Kidd

Scottish-born resident of New York. Commissioned privateer and pirate hunter. Hanged for murder and piracy at Wapping (May 1701).

Pirate Vessels: Adventure galley – launched Deptford 1695, sank at St Mary’s Isle, Madagascar (April 1698).

Quedah Merchant – seized off Surat (January 1698), abandoned at Hispaniola (May 1699).

Antonio – purchased at Hispaniola (May 1699), arrested at New York (June 1699).

Olivier ‘La Bouche’ Levasseur

French-born, resident of New Providence, Bahamas. Turned pirate after taking the pardon (1718). Cruised with Davis, Cocklyn, England and Taylor. Hanged at Réunion (July 1730).

Pirate Vessels: Indian Queen (ex-merchantman) – seized off Guinea Coast (1719), wrecked at Mayotte, Comoros Islands (July 1720).

Victory I – seized off Guinea Coast (Summer 1719), burned at Madagascar (c. 1723).

Bartholomew ‘Black Bart’ Roberts

Welsh-born third mate on the slaver Princess. Forced by Davis at Anamaboe, West Africa (June 1719), soon turned pirate, killed off Cape Lopez in action against hms Swallow, Captain Ogle (February 1722). Served under Davis, replaced him as captain after his death.

Pirate Vessels: Royal Rover (ex-Ostender Mark De Campo) – seized off Cape Three Points, West Africa (May 1719) and burned to the waterline off Jamaica (December 1719).

Royal Fortune I (ex-Bristol merchantman) – seized off New-foundland (1719).

Royal Fortune II (ex-French merchantman) – seized off New-foundland (1719).

Royal Fortune III (ex-Royal Africa Company Onslow) – seized off Liberia (August 1721), captured by hms Swallow off Cape Lopez (February 1722).

John Taylor

Resident of New Providence, Bahamas. Turned pirate (1718) with Edward England. Served as quartermaster until he replaced England as captain (1720). Took a Spanish pardon at Porto Bello and entered the service of the Costa Guarda (1721).

Pirate Vessels: Royal James (ex-merchantman Pearl) – probably seized off Guinea Coast (Spring 1719).

Victory I (ex-merchantman Peterborough) – seized off Guinea Coast (Summer 1719), burned at Madagascar (c. 1723).

Fancy (ex-Dutch merchantman) – abandoned at Isle de Johanna, Comoros Islands (August 1720).

Victory II (ex-East Indiaman Cassandra) – seized at Isle de Johanna (August 1720) and later surrendered to Spanish at Porto Bello (1723).

Edward ‘Blackbeard’ Teach (or Thatch or Drummond)

Resident of New Providence, Bahamas. Turned pirate 1717.

Cruised with Stede Bonnet. Killed in fight with Lieutenant Maynard in Ocracoke Inlet (November 1718).

Pirate Vessel: Queen Anne’s Revenge – captured in Ocracoke Inlet, North Carolina (November 1718).
