Chapter 15

Reports with Amazon Associates

Amazon Associates’ reports reflect each individual affiliate’s earnings. These reports are posted daily for any affiliate referrals and earnings during the previous day of business. Because the reports are posted daily, they are not live. You cannot obtain any data for the current day until the following day, when Amazon posts its daily report.

Reports for a particular day are normally posted by 9 a.m. on the following day. These reports are often posted even earlier. However, there are times when they are available much later, especially on days when there is heavy traffic to Amazon. The reason why reports are posted at unpredictable times is that Amazon runs batch processes that are dependent on computer load and traffic volume, and sometimes, there are glitches in the code. To eliminate the need for frequent visits to Amazon Associates Central, Amazon developed an e-mail notification service that lets you know the moment Amazon Associates’ report is posted.

Being able to analyze and act on Amazon’s easy-to-read reports is critical to the success of the Associates. Amazon offers extensive data about the activity of your various links to encourage you to optimize your performance in the program, try different techniques, and find which one works best. This information consists of data on your traffic, revenue, earnings, conversion rates, and link types. Reports are updated every 24 hours, ensuring that you have up-to-date information. Below is an example of the report provided to Associates.

Obtaining Information on Customers

In addition to looking at the absolute number of orders, you can also compare product-link conversion for merchandise that you promote on your Web site. The reports display the number of clicks for each product that occurred through a product link or add-to-cart button, number of orders placed through the product links, and the resulting product link conversion. You can also see the items that were ordered after customers clicked through to other Amazon pages.

For certain link types, Amazon can count an impression whenever one of your Amazon links is viewed. You receive a report on the number of impressions your Amazon links receive by link type in the Link-Type Report. You can utilize this information to gain a better understanding of those links that are the most effective in generating traffic and determine which links you can better use to maximize your performance and earnings. The Orders Report combines click and order information. In the top “Items with Orders” section, you are able to view each item ordered and how many direct-link clicks it received. Below the ordered items, you can find an “Items with No Orders” section.

When you click the arrow next to “Show All Items,” you can see a list of items that were viewed via a direct link but not ordered. In the summary at the bottom of the report, you may see a number of “Other Clicks.” These are clicks from other link types, including links to the homepage, links to search results, recommended product links, and links to the main landing page for each product category. Use the Link-Type Report to see how each link type is performing for your Web site.

Web Site Tracking for Associates

Amazon also offers Web tracking IDs, where Associates can analyze the performance results of various Web sites or merchandising strategies at the same time as acquiring their earnings under a single Associates ID. For instance, one Associate might use the tracking ID to follow referrals from a Web site and other referrals from the blog. Then the Associate can view earnings for all tracking IDs together, or generate reports for each tracking ID separately. You can create tracking IDs for your Associates account by clicking on “Manage your Tracking ID” link. With the features available here, you will be able to analyze your performance and build custom links. This will help you:
