Major League Baseball Clubs

except in a few rare cases, baseball team nicknames, which were usually assigned by sportswriters, were not official in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. In the first two decades of the twentieth century, American League teams were often called the “Americans,” National League teams were often called the “Nationals,” and Federal League teams were often called the “Feds” or “Federals.”
