was Anna. She didn't usually text me in the middle of the week. It had been about three weeks since we found out about the switch.
Anna- I need you!
Me- What's wrong?
Anna- I got asked out on a date and Mom & Dad said I can't go by myself in case he's a creeper. Will you come with me?
Me- As a chaperone?
I made a face and let out a deep breath. I didn't want to have any part of this. My phone buzzed. I picked it out of my lap.
Anna- No! Like a double date. We'd have to get you a date, though.
Me- I'm good.
Anna- I need you!
I stared at the screen. I felt slightly guilty.
Me- What kind of date is it?
Anna- There's a fair Friday.
I knew which fair she was talking about. We had Friday off of school for the state fair. Jer and I had talked about it this morning. He had asked me if I was going. I told him I might. He asked me to come with him. I told him I would let him know.
Anna- Do I need to find you a date?
Me- No.
Anna- who are you going with?
I switched to my contacts and scrolled down. I pushed JerRic's name and called.
He picked up on the first ring. “Are you okay?”
“The first thing out of your mouth is if I'm okay?” I couldn't hide my amusement.
“Well, we don't have an assignment due tomorrow.” JerRic's voice softened.
“Anna is trying to drag me to the state fair.” I let the comment sit there.
There was a pause. “Do you need reinforcements?”
“More like a pretend boyfriend, so she will stop trying to set me up.” I muttered.
JerRic laughed. “Yeah, sure. Sign me up.”
“Thanks.” I smiled at the wall.
“What time should I be there?” He had a smile in his voice.
“I'll text you when I find out.” I laughed.
“Sounds good.” JerRic responded.
“Goodnight.” I readjusted myself on the bed.
“Night, Beth.” JerRic's warm voice filled the room before he hung up.
