Iris!” JerRic was holding our daughter up as she practiced kicking her legs and moving her hands. He was moving her around the water like she was swimming on her own.
“I'm doing it!” Iris squealed.
“Not really.” Milo shook his head.
“She'll get there.” I put my arm around my son's shoulder. “You did.” I kissed him on his temple.
“Mom.” He wiped the kiss away.
I laughed. “Sorry, I forgot. You're too big for Mommy kisses now.”
Milo nodded like I should have already known that. He took off running and climbed onto the rope swing, and jumped into the water. My heart had a slight ping of sadness. I missed the little boy he had been. He came up smiling and waved. Apparently, Mommy kisses were out and waving was in. I waved back.
I slipped my sunglasses back on and laid back down on my towel. I heard the laughter and squeals of delight from my daughter. JerRic's encouraging voice was lulling me to sleep.
“Beth?” JerRic's voice startled me.
I sat up. “What's wrong?”
“We're going home. Do you want to come with us?” JerRic held out his hand. An amused expression crossed his face.
“Yeah.” I bit my lip sheepishly.
He pulled me to my feet. A few seconds later, we were outside of the cottage.
“I'm hungry.” Iris complained.
“We're all hungry.” Milo made a face.
I rubbed my necklace. “Dinner's outside on the table.”
“Yay!” Iris clapped her hand and started running.
“We have to pray!” JerRic called after her.
Iris stopped in place like someone had hit the pause button. She turned around and bowed her little head. Milo did the same.
“Lord, thank you for this food. Thank you for today and all of the fun we had swimming and not swimming.” JerRic peeked at me.
I bit back my laughter.
“In Jesus' name, amen.” JerRic finished.
“Amen.” Milo, Iris, and I echoed.
“Okay, go for it.” JerRic pointed.
Milo rounded the corner first, because his legs were slightly longer. Iris squealed as she chased him. I shook my head, not sure what to do with either of them. JerRic extended his hand to me. I smiled, and we walked into the backyard. My heart was full of happiness.
