Sant Tukaram
Sant Tukaram was a great poet Saint of India and made huge contributions to the Bhakti Movement in Maharashtra. Tukaram is considered the most influential figure in the history of Marathi literature. He was a devotee of Lord Vitthal (a form of Shree Krishna). He is especially revered by the Varkari community.
EARLY YEARS
Tukaram was born in Maharashtra in the early seventeenth century. There is dispute over the exact date of his birth, as some historians put the date closer to late sixteenth century. Tukaram started supporting his family at a very early age due to his father’s illness. Soon after his parents’ death, Tukaram was faced with hardships. He lost his wife Rakhumabai very early in life.
