Swami Vivekananda

Swami Vivekananda

Swami Vivekananda was probably the first Indian Saint to take the Divine knowledge of the Indian scriptures to the Western world. He was the chief disciple of Ramakrishna Paramahansa. Both the Guru and disciple played a major role in the revitalization of Hinduism in modern times.

EARLY YEARS

Swami Vivekananda was born in Kolkata in 1863 A.D. He was named Narendranath Dutta by his parents, who raised him in a very loving environment. His father was a famous lawyer, while his mother was a very religious woman. As a young boy, he was very bright. He was good at sports, studies and music. He enjoyed reading and he showed remarkable power of understanding and retention. As a young man, he had a very curious mind and wondered often about the world and its Creator. He spoke with many scholars about God, but none could satisfy his curiosity.
