The Royal Zoological Society of Scotland (RZSS) is an internationally renowned animal management, conservation, education and research institution and one of Scotland’s leading charities. Edinburgh Zoo and the Highland Wildlife Park near Kingussie – two of the country’s premier animal attractions – are owned and managed by RZSS.
Since 1909 the charity has stayed true to its original mission: ‘To inspire and excite our visitors with the wonder of living animals and so to promote the conservation of threatened species and habitats.’ More than a century later, this conservation and research organisation has earned respect around the world and become a much-loved and supported institution. Edinburgh Zoo is iconic in terms of both its history and geographical positioning and is Scotland’s most popular paying visitor attraction after Edinburgh Castle.
As an independent charity, RZSS receives no direct funding from local or national government and relies on commercial income and philanthropic support to further the organisation’s work. By purchasing this book, you have contributed a donation to a special fund dedicated to the welfare of the pandas in the care of RZSS. But there are many more ways you can help RZSS further its charitable objectives. You can become a member, adopt one of the animals (including a panda!) or make a donation to one of RZSS’s projects.
