AUDIENCE:

The people of Israel

PURPOSE:

To give the history of Israel’s conquest of the Promised Land.

The book of Joshua is an amazing adventure story. God repeatedly urges Joshua and the people to “be strong and courageous” (1:6) as they face the enemies who had made their ancestors cower. There were high points, such as the fall of Jericho in Joshua 6, which is commemorated in children’s songs still today. But there were also low points, such as their initial defeat at Ai in Joshua 7, where thirty-six warriors lost their lives as a result of one man’s disobedience.

When pain and suffering come into our lives, we are often faced with challenging battles. How we respond to these hardships will impact those we love and the generations to come. The book of Joshua provides a beautiful picture of God’s goodness, kindness, and mercy toward his children who stand strong in the face of their enemies.

SUFFERING AND DISABILITY THEMES

floral bullet  Real courage comes from God. Joshua faced the daunting task of leading the Israelites into Canaan. Yet Joshua was not alone; God was with him, giving him the courage for what seemed impossible. With each victory Joshua learned to stand strong, and his courage was contagious. When we accept the courage that God gives, we find strength to face whatever is ahead—even in our most vulnerable circumstances.

floral bullet  Trust God’s presence. God made Joshua a powerful promise: He would be with Joshua to help him stand against his enemies (1:5). But God did not explain how the victories would be won—Joshua had to trust in God’s promise. God never abandons those he loves; his promises are as true today as they were in Joshua’s time (Deut 31:6; Heb 13:5). We can trust God’s plans, even though our understanding is limited.

floral bullet  Our inheritance is sure. Hundreds of years had passed since God promised the land of Canaan to Abraham and his descendants. Now Joshua was ready to lead the Israelites into their promised inheritance. We have hope of an even greater inheritance through our Savior, Jesus Christ. Our promised inheritance includes freedom from all disability, suffering, and weakness once we reach the Promised Land that Jesus is preparing for us (John 14:1-3; Heb 4:8-9).
