33:8-26 Acceptance Elihu issued a caution to Job about the sort of complaints he was bringing against God: “God is greater than any human being” (33:12). This means, among other things, that God’s actions and reasons are often beyond human comprehension. Yet Elihu also gave a message of potential hope for those who suffer, insisting that God allows—even sends—suffering not to reject the sufferer but to accept them and to train them to rely on God instead of their own human righteousness and goodness. While this idea doesn’t explain the divine reason behind all suffering, it does provide a way for those who suffer to approach God and await his loving response.
