5:21-24 Practice True Religion The book of James defines true religion in this way: “Pure and genuine religion in the sight of God the Father means caring for orphans and widows in their distress and refusing to let the world corrupt you” (Jas 1:27). It is possible that James had these verses from Amos in mind when he penned those words. Whether in ancient Israel, the early church, or even today, religious observance is meaningless if it isn’t accompanied by a changed life. A clear sign of that changed life, which both Amos and James point out, is actively pursuing justice for those who are vulnerable and oppressed.
