2:13-15 A Refugee in Egypt Jesus was not born into a family with wealth or status. In fact, the family became refugees in Egypt because of a politically motivated attempt on Jesus’ life. Through it all, Mary and Joseph believed God would lead, protect, and provide for them because of his word given through the angels.
2:16-18 The Death of Boys in Bethlehem Even as God brought his Son into this world so that people might live, the evil one used the occasion to bring death to as many as thirty young boys (Bethlehem was a small village at the time). From the very beginning in Eden, Satan has opposed God’s plan; still, God would bring about blessing even as the evil one sought to bring death. The resurrection of Jesus Christ was the final victory over death.
