27:32-34 Death’s Cruelty Crucifixion was a slow, cruel form of death developed as a warning to those who might contemplate rebelling against Roman authority. Even seemingly merciful measures, such as assigning a passerby to carry the cross of the condemned, were designed to ensure prolonged suffering and slow death. All this was just a routine part of Roman rule. But the day Jesus died was no ordinary day: They crucified the eternal Son of God—who then came back to life!
27:45-46 Christ Took Our Sin After three hours of darkness, Jesus cried out the opening words of Psalm 22: “My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?” The apostle Paul later explained: “God made Christ, who never sinned, to be the offering for our sin, so that we could be made right with God through Christ” (2 Cor 5:21). Christ allowed the sins of all humanity—including yours and mine—to be placed on him so that we could be reconciled to God. He deserves our everlasting love and gratitude.
