14:7 Serve the Least of These Some people misunderstand Jesus’ words in this verse to be giving an excuse for why not to serve the poor. But nothing could be further from the truth. He consistently loved and served the poor and marginalized, and he expects his followers to live the same way. Yet here Jesus reminded his disciples of the importance of worshiping him and spending time adoring him, as the woman did when she poured the perfume on his feet. It is not wasteful to give our best to worship God, especially as we also remember to live our lives in ways that show how much we love Jesus by loving the people he loved—including the poor and those with disabilities.
14:36 Complete Surrender Jesus asked for “this cup of suffering” to be taken away. This moment puts Jesus’ humanity on full display. Dear God, I am suffering, and you can do something about it. But then Jesus models humanity attuned to divinity, “Yet I want your will to be done, not mine.” It was not easy for Jesus to place his suffering in God’s hands, but he did. And by his model, we can learn to do so too.
