18:9-14 Shame or Humility Our disabilities and weaknesses can evoke a sense of shame. People who were once active and successful may need to be fed, bathed, and dressed as if they were helpless infants. Others struggle with pride over being forced to ask for help with staggering medical bills. However, “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble” (Jas 4:6). Our pride can be replaced with humility as we daily take up our cross and reflect the glory of God the Father. We don’t need to prove our worth to God (or anyone else) but instead should rely on the loving mercy of our heavenly Father, who will exalt those who humbly rely on him.
