13:4-17 The Ultimate Servant Jesus, the one who is most worthy to be served, provides the ultimate example of service. Feet are dirty. After hours of walking on hot, dry, dusty roads, they are even worse. Yet, Jesus washed his disciples’ feet to provide an example for them—and us—to follow. Jesus wants us all to follow him and serve one another. When we care for and serve others, we are following in Jesus’ footsteps.

13:6 Accepting Service We can all relate to Peter. Often, it’s easier to serve than to be served. It makes us feel powerless or embarrassed when someone else chooses to do something for us that we would prefer to do for ourselves. However, sometimes we need to accept service with grace, allowing another to experience the joy of being a blessing. This is God’s way of washing our feet.
