M aking Pom Poms
Pom Poms are so fun and easy to make and can be used on all sorts of projects – on hats, scarves, bags and more!
All you need is some cardboard and yarn, and some round lids or shapes to draw around, and you’re all set!
Step 1: How large would you like your pom pom? Find a jar lid, CD or something of similar size and draw around it on the cardboard. Now draw a smaller circle inside the large one. Repeat this, so that you cut two cardboard “donuts” that are both the same.
Step 2: If you are using a large ball of yarn, it will be too big to pass through the hole, so make a small ball that will fit by winding the yarn around your fingers lots of times. Stop before it is too large to fit through the hole.
Step 3: Now put both discs together. You’re now ready to start winding your yarn around the discs.
Step 4: Holding the two discs together, start winding your yarn over the disc and through the hole, repeating again and again until you have covered the whole disc in yarn. Keep repeating this until the hole is too small for any more yarn to pass through.
Step 5: Carefully insert one blade of your scissors between the two discs, and start cutting through the yarn. Keep moving the scissors around the edge, cutting the yarn as you go, until you have cut all the way around.
Step 6: Cut a length of yarn and carefully pull apart the two discs slightly. Wrap your yarn between the two discs and around the middle of your pom pom, and tie in a tight knot. Do this a couple more times so that your pom pom is really secure. Now rip or cut each disc away, and roll your pom pom between your hands to hide the join and make it nice and fluffy!
