nderstanding Crochet Terminology
Once you move on from this book, regular crochet patterns or instructions will feature a host of abbreviations and crochet terminology. We will use them, together with fuller explanations, throughout this book to get you used to them and prepare you for regular patterns.
The names for the basic stitches are different in the UK to the US, so itβs important to know the origins of any book or pattern you are using to ensure you use the correct stitch. This book uses the UK terminology throughout β for US readers, please see the US names below.
Crochet Terminology
Foundation chain
This is the base chain of stitches that you create and work the first row of crochet stitches into.
Foundation row
The first row of stitches worked into the foundation chain.
Skip a stitch
Miss the next stitch along and work into the one after that.
Turning chain
The extra chain stitches that you work at the beginning of a new row to bring your hook/work up to the correct height for the next stitch. Each stitch may require a different number of turning chain stitches.
Dc2tog
β work two double crochet stitches together
Insert hook into next stitch along, yrh (yarn over hook) draw loop through. Do not finish double crochet stitch, instead insert hook into next stitch along, yrh, pull loop through. You now have three loops on your hook. Yrh, then pull through all three stitches.
Dc3tog
β work three double crochet stitches together
As above but do this for three stitches in a row, which will result in four loops on your hook. Yrh then draw through all four loops.
