Cassandra is being extremely emotional as Raoul helps her down the gangway, vertigo taking over her senses. They finally reach the deck and she breathes a dramatic sigh of relief. Raoul and Roselyn exchange smiles and Roselyn has to turn away, covering her mouth with a hand.
Jean is more sympathetic toward Cassandra. ‘You had best go to the passenger cabin to rest.’ He turns to Roselyn, ‘We will stay in Dover tonight and start out early tomorrow morning.’
Roselyn who is still amused by Cassandra’s dramatics, indicates Louis’s wagon. ‘Are we to be entertained during our voyage?’
Jean shakes his head. ‘No. Wherever my duties take me, there is always a crowd to be further entertained. Louis, my brother, is able to take advantage of that and put on a show of his own.’
‘Won’t his wagon delay our progress?’
‘Only as much as yours. Both will travel at their own pace while we move ahead at ours.’
Roselyn considers his words over. ‘Wait! Does that mean you are travelling to England for an execution?’
‘It would not be appropriate to discuss my purpose for travelling at the moment, my lady.’
She remains silent a moment, pondering the whole situation. ‘Well, I will watch our departure then join Cassandra for the sea crossing. We won’t impose on you in any way during our journey. And we are most grateful to you, aren’t we Cass?’
‘We are. And as for you,’ she turns on Raoul crossing her arms, ‘we are still waiting for that apology!’
Roselyn intercedes, ‘What else could we expect from Squire Raoul, thinking of us going astray when we did.’
‘I don’t care what he thinks. It’s his manner. Obviously not a gentleman who’s been raised on good manners.’
Roselyn can feel Jean and Raoul’s eyes burning down on Cassandra, needing a further intervention. ‘Good sirs, all we ask is safety until we reach my home. We will take care to be as little trouble to you as possible.’
As everyone looks satisfied with the outcome, Cassandra turns to Raoul again. ‘Now we will have that apology.’
Raoul almost laughs, but instead mimics a ceremonial bow toward Roselyn. ‘Accept my humble apology for anything I said to offend you.’
She tries not to laugh. Jean seeing Cassandra looking offended again ushers her toward the accommodation door. ‘You will find a cabin through here. Do please make yourself comfortable.’
He opens the door for her. As she passes through, she stops and turns. ‘Manners are important you know.’
The gangway is cleared away and all is ready for sailing.
Roselyn steps toward the stern castle ladder watched by Raoul who, with Vincent, is attending to their horses on deck. Jean notices his look and approaches him. ‘Raoul, stay with the horses until they feel settled.’
Roselyn arrives at the stern castle, looking up to the billowing sails, down at the ships wake as it pulls away from the jetty and wonders how the next chapter in her life is going to be.
