ASH MORANA SWORE, AND hurled his heavy crystal cut glass across the room. Whiskey splashed out in a golden arc, and the glass shattered against the stone wall of his private den. He’d given the fools all the tools they would need to accomplish his plan. Striding over to the side table, he poured himself another whiskey. And yet, here it was, centuries later, and they still had not accomplished the simple matter he asked of them. He thought about what the High Elder of the Protectors of the Sacred Way said to him three hundred years ago. “Lord Morana, I received a dream last night, that I believe you should know about. A great being with long white hair, and fathomless eyes came to me. He said that a Dragon and a Lady would destroy everything you’ve built. He called you a deceiver and warned of terrible sorrow if we did not turn from this path.”
He’d wanted to kill the cretin, and if he hadn’t exercised his formidable control, he would’ve done so immediately and with violence. Instead, he smiled at the High Elder, and invited him to stay for dinner so they could discuss this dream, and its possible interpretations. Rune. It could be no other. Rune would not destroy his plans. And since Rune so foolishly showed his hand, Ash shrugged, it was only reasonable that he would outplay that particular Creator. He smirked a bit and thought about how he would like to play with the other creator, force her to her knees. Make her pay for rejecting him. And that, too, was on his agenda. But first, he had to come up with a plan to prevent that fool’s dream from coming true. He made sure there was plenty of wine and women available as they dined, and he coaxed that High Elder right into his plan.
Ash stared broodingly at the wet mark on his wall and took a drink of whiskey, relishing the burn. It was time for a new plan.
