Phoebe is the daughter of a character of the same name in the earlier <span class="t23">Carlingford</span> novel <span class="t23">Salem Chapel</span>. In this novel, Phoebe Junior is sent to stay in Carlingford with her grandparents (who also featured in <span class="t23">Salem Chapel</span>) and the novel centres on Phoebe’s experiences there. A subplot involves the curate Mr May, whose money troubles tempt him to a desperate act. </p> </body> </html>
