Its first publication in book form was in the collection <span class="t23">Stories of the Seen and Unseen</span> (1902). The story is a poignant one, in which the elderly Lady Mary begs permission to return to the world from the afterlife, in order to help her young god-daughter, who has been left penniless at her death. </p> </body> </html>
