This supernatural novella, one of Oliphant’s tales of the Seen and Unseen, was first published in Blackwood’s Magazine in 1884. Its first publication in book form was in the collection Stories of the Seen and Unseen (1902). The story is a poignant one, in which the elderly Lady Mary begs permission to return to the world from the afterlife, in order to help her young god-daughter, who has been left penniless at her death.
