MAJOR IMMIGRANT GROUPS IN NEW YORK, 1850–2014
Note: Blank cells in this chart indicate either that no immigrant population from that nation was reported in a given year or, more commonly, that the immigrants from that place were subsumed under a census category such as “Asia,” “Other Europe,” “South America,” etc. The blank cell for Poland in 1910 results from the Census Bureau decision to include the population of Poland within the figures for Austria, Germany and Russia owing to the military occupation of Poland by those nations. Population of “Ireland” includes the entire island of Ireland except for 1960, 1990, 2000, and 2014, when components of the United Kingdom population were not specified. “China” includes Hong Kong and Taiwan. The Census Bureau published data only on New York’s “white” immigrants in 1940, 1950, and 1960.
