Murray Bail was born in Adelaide in 1941. His first novel, Homesickness, won the National Book Council Award for Australian Literature and the Age Book of the Year Award. Holden’s Performance won the Vance Palmer Prize for Fiction. His much-loved novel Eucalyptus won the Commonwealth Writers’ Prize and the Miles Franklin Award in 1999.
